Foot And Mouth Disease In Our Dairy
Saturday, 09 January 2010 18:29

Disaster has struck! Several of our cows have contracted foot and mouth disease; it is a terrible highly contagious disease that causes a lot of pain and discomfort for the animal effected -it can even lead to death! Sadly there is nothing we can do as quarantining the infected animals from the rest of our herd is too late. We are treating them and will treat any others that are effected along the way. There is little if any danger of it spreading outside our herd to other animals as our dairy is quite remote.

Quilts To Warm Up Winter...
Thursday, 07 January 2010 09:44

A large shipment of around 120 quilts/blankets arrived just in time for winter both for our children and staff. The blankets were stitched by Emanuel Lutheran Church in Skandia MI and sent to us thanks to the wonderful support of CASA.

Everyone was very excited to receive their quilts not only because of the bitter cold mornings we have been having of late, but also because they were bright coloured and would help to brighten up the children’s bedrooms.

We want to express our thanks both to CASA and Emanuel Lutheran Church for their hard work and generosity.

Welcome To 2010!
Friday, 01 January 2010 12:45

New Years celebrations this year were a lot of fun for all our kids many of the staff and volunteers worked hard to ensure that they had a great time. Around 40 of the children stayed up till midnight to welcome in the new year and were rewarded with a massive display of fireworks thanks to Brad & Miriam Crouch two of our volunteers from Australia. As they have done every year the kids danced till they could dance no more... a massive bonfire, snacks, hot tea & coffee and various other treats ensured that all stayed awake, full, warm and happy!

The older hostel boys also went for a camping trip just before New Years Eve. They took food and supplies and had a great time in spite of the cold winter nights. There were high hopes that they would spot elephants as a herd of them had recently moved into the area where they were camping but sadly nothing was seen or heard. This was probably for the best as wild elephants are far more dangerous than most people realize.
