Crazy Hat Party
A few weeks back one of our volunteers from Australia had a special party for all of our older girls. All of the children were required to make and wear their own special party hats.

Horsing Around...
Thursday, 08 October 2009 19:08
The children had a great time today when one of the local villagers brought their horse in… in an instant a stream of children were lined up ready for a ride. It was amazing that some of the smallest of our children were ready to ride it alone. The horse itself was a little old and weak but the weight of the 4-14 year olds were easy enough for it to bare. It did struggle just a little however when one of our staff members attempted to ride it (and promptly fell off) –lets just say I think the horse was happy that he only made one attempt to get on. Most of the children got a chance to have a ride, those who didn’t will get the opportunity because the owner of the horse promised to bring it back tomorrow.

Sunshine...
Wednesday, 07 October 2009 17:54
Thankfully the rain stopped sometime in the night and by mid afternoon today most of the flood waters had receded. The damage from the floods was fairly large, many of the poorer locals were worse effected -especially those who had cut their rice and left it in the fields as it was simply washed away.

Small Girls Bathroom #2

Work on the bathrooms is still going well, as of today there are only a few small pieces and some border tiles to go in. We hope to have it completed by tomorrow.

Eugene and Clifton head off tonight with the school group from Tasmania. They should be back in 4-5 days.

Flooded!
Tuesday, 06 October 2009 20:23
The weather over the last few days has been terrible for us, rain has been unceasing and with our rice crop ready for harvest this is the last thing that we need. Heavy rain on a ripe crop reduces the quality of the yield and thus reduces the profits that we get. As long as we don’t get too much rain it should be alright though at the moment it seems the water is both failing from the sky and coming up from the ground! Most of our workshop area, the main road into the mission and some staff houses are not only flooded but in the middle of a running river. Some areas are under 50cm+ of water!

The flooded workshop...
This time last year we had a terrible flood which not only took out the Jugbora Bridge (the main lifeline into this side of India) but also destroyed hundreds of homes in our area. Many people here can not handle another flood like that and fear that the rain will not cease is increasing. The Jugbora River, which is normally less than 30cm deep is a raging torrent in places the water has risen over 3m already!

During rainy days like this there is very little for the children to do but thanks to the help of the visitors we have here there has been plenty of cards, board games and crafts going on to pass the time. Brad Crouch one of our visitors from South Australia introduced the kids to Monopoly and the kids were instantly hooked. Hopefully tomorrow will see an end to the rain.

A Sad Farewell...
Sunday, 04 October 2009 18:08

Its been a busy couple of days. Ashish has gone off on holidays for about 10 days as has Lucy (our kitchen in-charge). Eugene and Clifton went to Delhi to pick up some students and a teacher visiting us from Scotch Oakburn in Launceston, Tasmania. They returned with the visitors on Saturday. The school group is made up of all girls aged 15/16 who are members of Round Square and are here in India to attend a conference in Ajmer, Rajestan on the 10th. In a few days the group will head off for a quick tour of Agra and Jaipur before heading on for the conference, Eugene and Clifton will continue on this trip with them.

Work in the Small Girls Bathrooms is coming to an end, hopefully just 2 or 3 more days and it should all be completed.

Rick and Gail

Friday saw the sad departure of one of our mission girls Gail as she heads off to Delhi to find a job. For the last 4 years Gail has faithfully supported Rick and Maxine in everything they have done, assisting Maxine throughout the day with various jobs as well as keeping the office running smoothly. Many of the visitors/volunteers who have spent time with us in the last few years have come to know and love Gail, she will be sorely missed by everyone for a long time to come and we wish her all the best in everything she does.

School Holidays
Tuesday, 29 September 2009 21:07
With school holidays underway the kids have been going crazy looking for stuff to do to fill their days. Thanks to the support of some donations online we have been able to organize a bunch of exciting activities for the kids; including kite flying, crafts, jungle picnics, reading, board games and computer games.
Cooking fried rice in the jungle...
Priscilla, Katie and Miriam took a group of 20 Small Girls for a picnic in the jungle. They had a great time chasing after monkeys that were trying to steal their food! Paddled around in a stream and cooked some fried rice and a few other snacks to eat while there! They even took along some firecrackers but in all the excitement they forgot them!
