In June 2016, The Good Shepherd Agricultural Mission received an unexpected and deeply meaningful visit from representatives connected with the National Human Rights Commission. What began as part of a wider district review became a moment of real encouragement for the Mission, as the team walked through the campus, observed the children’s residential facilities, and took time to understand the broader work being carried out at GSAM.

Their visit looked beyond one building or one program. The report noted the children’s accommodation, kitchen, dining facilities, school, dairy, agriculture, workshops, vocational training, recreation, and the wider community support being provided through the Mission. It recognized GSAM not only as a place where children were cared for, but as a self-sustaining community built around education, dignity, practical training, and long-term support.

One of the most meaningful observations in the report was that the Mission was “run like a family” and that the children staying there were “quite happy.” For those of us who live and work here every day, those words mattered deeply. Our goal has never been simply to provide food, shelter, or education, but to create a place where children are known, loved, supported, and given the opportunity to grow into confident young adults.

The final recommendation of the report was especially encouraging. It stated: “The mission is doing a commendable job. It serves as an example for other NGOs running orphanage/children home. The effort should be duly recognized by the Government.” While GSAM has never worked for recognition, this affirmation from an outside national body was a powerful reminder that quiet, consistent care can be seen, valued, and respected.

Today, we continue to build on that same foundation: caring for children, strengthening education, supporting families, developing sustainable agriculture, and serving the community around us. The 2016 NHRC report remains an important part of our history, and a reminder of the kind of work we are committed to carrying forward.
